Dr Giamila Quattrone

Giamila Quattrone is an architect and PhD in Architectural Technology, coordinating ArCHIAM's activities. She is also Associate Lecturer at Manchester School of Architecture, where she teaches in the BA(Hons) Year 2 Design Studio and Humanities and Technologies electives.

Since 2010 Giamila has been Research Fellow at Nottingham Trent University School of Architecture Design and the Built Environment, where she is responsible for coordinating research projects funded by Nottingham Trent University and the Ministry of Heritage and Culture of Oman - Principal Investigator Prof Soumyen Bandyopadhyay - for the documentation of traditional oasis settlements in Central Oman towards the delivery of culturally and technically informed Heritage Management Plans.

Her interest focuses on the exploration of the spatial impact and effects of cultural, social and economic transformation processes determined by modernization on the local settlement patterns and construction techniques.

Research, scholarly and professional interests

Giamila's other key areas of research and teaching encompass:

• low-tech building envelope, eco-friendly materials, materials reuse and recycling
• sustainable building adaptive reuse
• contemporary regionalist architecture, with a focus on the relationship between dwelling patterns and appropriate technologies, human behaviors, socio-cultural values and the built environment, communities and their technical skills, innovation and tradition, design and build participatory processes.
